From the moment you buy your laptop and with regular use of your computer, installing and uninstalling software, including using the internet, will slow it down. Why is this? With the more software installed, more web sites you visit. All of this uses up space and resources, which means that is more to load, and more things to slow it down and then you will be asking about how to speed up my laptop.

How do you speed up your computer? Follow these easy steps.

1. Uninstalling old software you rarely use. If you go to the Control Panel, then Add/Remove or Uninstall Software, you will be given a list of almost everything installed. If you have no idea what it is, you might not need it. That does not mean you should just remove anything that you don’t use or want, you have to be selective. This will free resources

2. On a laptop the performance of the graphics adapter is critical and if there are any problems with the display drivers your laptop will grind to a halt, crash and refuse to certain games and programs. Check for the latest display drivers from the manufacturers site and update them. Otherwise your computer will be so slow you will be asking your self how can I speed up my laptop.

3. Get spyware and adware removal utilities. You can find these online. Sometimes Spyware and adware install without your knowledge. Adware brings up ads, track where you go, and report this back to various companies. While adware is not damaging spyware is and will steal everything you store or enter on your laptop, including credit card numbers and passwords and they will also slow your laptop right down as they run constantly.

4. Run a registry scan. When you remove software, it is supposed to take everything with it. All files, registry entries, configuration settings, everything. The truth is, they do not. They leave things behind, including entries in the registry. Windows uses that when it boots up, and when it is running and the more junk clogging the registry the slower your computer is. By cleaning it you remove that junk, fix any corruption and you will speed up your computer and will no longer be asking how to speed up my laptop.

They call it the Blue Screen of Death and you’ve heard that it is hard to fix. You’ve also heard from others that the only cure for it is a reinstall of your Operating System. You do not want it to happen to your PC but now it is happening to you, you are now staring at a blue computer screen that looks very much like how they have described it– bright blue screen filled with message that could make the head of the non-technical spin.

Don’t panic, it’s not the end of the world, you can fix it.

The blue screen of death can be caused by various things, it happens when your Windows operating system detects a hardware, software, or driver error which could hamper its smooth operation.

There are times when all one needs to do to resolve a blue screen is a simple restart of the machine. But when a computer shows you a blue screen every once in a while, it is actually signaling to you that something is wrong deep within and that if it is not addressed immediately a bigger problem could occur that can only be solve with a reinstall of the OS.

The proper technical term for the Blue Screen of Death is “Windows Stop Message”. This message appears when Windows could not recover from an error or a problem. Windows stops and diagnostic information appears on a blue screen. The layman would not easily understand the diagnostic message being displayed, but a good technician can easily figure out the root of the problem through this message.

The first step in dealing with a blue screen is to read the error message and write down on a piece of paper the error code then press Enter to go back to Windows but if your computer will not go back to Windows after you hit the Enter key you have no choice but to restart the computer by pressing Crtl+Alt+Del, in which case you’ll lose all the unsaved information in any program that was open when the blue screen happened. Restarting may fix blue screen if the problem was caused by a program that encountered an error that could be fixed with a reboot.

If your computer will not restart correctly and gives you the blue screen again, do the Crtl+Alt+Del again. While the PC is rebooting and memory-checks, press the F8 button repeatedly to bring up the Windows advanced options menu. When the Windows advanced option menu comes up, select the “restore last known good configuration” option. The “last known good configuration” is the latest settings that worked properly. The system will roll back to it and try to use it to be able to load. Windows XP has a built-in utility that allows for the storing of recent save point. This can always work as your first aid to blue screen but if the problem persists after trying this out, you can begin to think that a bigger problem in the system is happening. It could be that one or more programs is causing the problem.

If you have just installed a new program or made an update or installed a new driver, try uninstalling the program in safe mode. To enter the safe more, just press F8 while Windows is starting up, before the Windows Splash Screen appears. You will be prompted to select a mode that Windows will use, one of those modes is “Safe Mode with networking”. Select it using the arrow keys to navigate and hit Enter when you are at it. In Safe Mode with networking you can connect to the internet. Fire up Google and type in the search box the error code you’ve written down earlier and hit Enter. Google will then give results that would give you hints as to what device is causing the error and how to solve it.

It is possible to uninstall drivers and software in safe mode, just go to Start>Control Panel then click on Performance and Maintenance. Click on See basic information about your computer to bring up the System Properties dialog. Click on Hardware tab and click on the Device Manager button. The Device Manager will pop up. In the device Manager, select the device whose driver you need to uninstall and right-click on it and select “Uninstall…”. If it is a software that should be removed, just go to Start>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs and select the program to remove. After uninstalling the program, restart Windows in normal mode.

Over the last year there haven’t been many new Acer laptop releases, but those that have been released have been of top notch quality.

The most notable of the recent Acer laptop releases was the Ferrari 1100 that has added style and exclusivity  to a gadget that is rapidly becoming every man’s favourite toy.   Another recent Acer laptop release is the sleek Aspire One ten-inch netbook, which is an upgrade of the previous Aspire one version and is immensely popular among portability-minded individuals. One of the most striking features of  these laptops is the range of  mouthwatering metallic colours they come in. Acer has cleverly maximised the screen size while still keeping the Aspire One light and portable. Ladies may be even more excited about the fact that the Aspire One Notebook now comes in pink.

The Acer 8930 gaming laptop, improved and released last year, is the antithesis of the Aspire one, as it is known as the giant of gaming laptops. The 18.4 inch monitor and NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GT graphics with 512MB of dedicated video memory offers one of the best gaming experiences around, although the price of $1800 (R18 000) is almost as hefty as this Acer laptop. The Aspire 8930 also boats a CineCrystal widescreen display and a Blu-Ray drive for a thrilling movie experience.

Three other notebook models powered by Acer’s Gemstone platform  were released last year: the 6930, 5735 and 4730. The 6930 is a hit with movie fans as the 16-inch HD Cine Crystal LCD panel and Dolby surround sound provide the laptop equivalent of home theatre heaven. The 5735 provides a large screen at a low price. The overall look and feel is that of a budget laptop but it does the job. The Aspire 4730 is almost priced as reasonably as a netbook but it offers all the added advantages of a laptop. This is the Acer laptop for the average Joe or college student; it is an average size and weight and has everything you need without all the unnecessary frills.

Online reviews show that people are generally very satisfied with their Acers laptops. They are of solid quality, good value and are the safe laptop option for many. Despite their reliable reputation, Acer is not stoic but keeps up with trends and the full range of Acer laptop options offer something for everyone.

You’re ready to buy a new laptop or replace a laptop notebook and naturally you want to get the best laptop deal you can get and you probably already know that looking online is probably the best place to start. However don’t dismiss looking offline at big box or computer stores to get a feel for the variety of laptops that are on the market.

First of all you’ll want to list your needs in terms of the features. Some important features to consider would include: processor type, storage capacity, screen size, battery longevity and wireless connectivity. And these will affect the pricing.

Other features and accessories include: microphone, back-up battery, video card, power cord, GPS navigation, battery charger, wireless mouse, sound card, CD drive, wireless network card, adapter, keyboard, memory, laptop bag, case.

How much do you want to spend? Do you want a new, used or refurbished laptop? Or do you want to rent a laptop?

If possible try out various models in all price ranges, even those out of your price range, to get an understanding of all the features available. New features are introduced all the time and seeing and feeling the laptop in action can tell you whether you’d be comfortable with it or not. I know many say to just go ahead and buy online but it’s better to be familiar with what you’re getting if you can. After you’ve tried out a few, go back to the one that feels best. And try to stay within your budget.

If there’s a salesperson handy find out if it’s a good seller and if he/she has any personal experience with it.

Find out all you can about any unfamiliar terms and features: flat panel, TFT, LCD, wireless, extra memory, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity for example, so you’ll be well-informed.

Keeping in mind that you what to get the best laptop deal, you can compare prices online once you know the brand and model you want to buy. It can be confusing because there are so many brands, different operating systems and many different features and accessories.

Be careful about paying for features that you won’t use. And make sure to get those that you do need. Even if you have to pay a little more to get something that would be useful, it’s better to get it for the small difference in price compared to the value it’ll be for you in the long run. Also it’ll depend on how long you plan to keep the laptop. Do you plan on selling it in a year or so and buying a new one or do you plan to keep it for two to three years or more. If so, make sure to get a good size hard drive.

Salespeople may be up to date on the trends and be technology-savvy, but if you discuss laptops with a salesperson, be aware they may be getting bonuses or commissions for pushing a particular brand and/or model.

Ask your friends and your computer and laptop-savvy associates which laptop brands, models and features they like and why, and what they don’t like.

Make a list of the brands and models you’ve tried and those that have been recommended to you, then start your “best laptop deal” online search. Some of the many available brands new and used are: Toshiba, Lenovo, Dell, Asus, IBM, Apple, HP, Compaq, Sony, Acer, Fujitsu, Samsung, gateway and Panasonic laptops.

You’re looking for comparisons, reviews, ratings and rankings for the laptops first of all. Look for anything negative, because you want to know that going into a deal. Type in the word ‘problem’ or ‘bad’ after the brand and model.

Once you have some good background information, reviews, and negative and positive comments, you’re ready to search for the best laptop deal online. Some of the best deals can be obtained for close-out laptop models. Many lines are discontinued to make room for new inventory using the newest technology. You can often get good discounts and the best laptop deals at close-out sales.

There are also fire sales, discounted laptops and liquidation sales. Try typing in these words one at a time along with the brand name and model: ‘close-out’, ‘discontinued’, ‘discount’, ‘liquidation sale’, ‘wholesale’, ‘low cost’, ‘low priced’, ‘cheapest’ and ‘cheap’. Although some of these tips are good old common sense, you should be well-armed when you look for and buy the best laptop deal online. Of course getting a free laptop would be the best deal and maybe there is a legal way to do that!

Today almost everybody wants a laptop computer, aside for their usefulness in school and work you can also be entertained by watching movies, listening to music etc. Most new laptops are expensive, but now you can buy a laptop at an affordable price.

Some companies sell refurbished laptops. When I say refurbished it means to restore something. There are three types of refurbished laptops, the custom option, factory option and the used option.

The Custom Option

You can customized your refurbished laptop according to your preference. They assemble repaired laptops so that they will match up to the customers’ needs. Here the purchaser can stipulate parts of the computer such as processor speed, hard drive, screen size, etc.

The Factory Option

These laptops are new laptops that are returned to the manufacturer because of minor problems like problem with the screen or a dent in its case. These laptops are identified when they are examined by the manufacturer itself.

This laptop will be checked and reformatted and the operating system will be reloaded. They will change the serial number so as to identify that it is a factory refurbished laptop, and it will then be sold by the manufacturer at a cheaper price.

The Used Option

There are times when laptops are used for a time and then sold by their owner for various reasons. It might be that they wanted to upgrade to the latest model. When this laptop is sold off, they will then be upgraded and sold for a much lower price.

This laptop is as good as a latest version. In buying refurbished used laptops one must take note of two things: how many previous users the laptop has had and when was it first purchased. These two things are important for you to determine the type of use the laptop has been subjected to. The date it was first purchased is important because hardware becomes obsolete in about 5 years. So unless the laptop you purchased contains refurbished parts, you should only purchase a refurbished laptop that is no more than 3 years old.

The information above can help you find a good reliable laptop computer that fits your requirement. You just need to consider these tips.

There are lots of companies that are selling refurbished laptops, and in order for you to get a cheaper one you have to go around or search the net for the product and model that you desire.
You then list the price and compare them after you are done searching.
For you to be sure of the reliability of a refurbished laptop you should buy it from reputable companies, just to be safe.

People need to be practical these days, it does not mean that if it is refurbished it’s no good. There are many refurbished laptops that function like new ones.

While new laptops are quite expensive, most refurbished laptop computers usually cost very less, and often less than $500. In most cases, they are as good as new and recently, most refurbished laptops come with warranties, just like a new product. A refurbished laptop can satisfy your basic computing needs, such as word processing, Internet and e-mail, creating spreadsheets, playing CDs, and more.

Laptop manufacturers across the world offer refurbished laptops, including major brands like Sony, Dell, IBM, Toshiba, and HP. The prices of laptops are related to the type of processor, operating system, modem, and network card; size of the hard drive and RAM; and whether there is a CD/DVD-ROM/RW, a video card, a sound card, and zip drive. Prices are also affected by screen size and type of chassis. And consequently, the spares of these laptops also vary from brand to brand.

Of the major items that can be termed as spare parts or accessories of laptops, batteries come first. There is a big market for laptop batteries. Other spares include car/air power adapters, AC power adapters, laptop floppy drives, laptop hard drives, modems, PCMCIA cards, CD-ROM drives, laptop DVD ROM drives, CDRW and combo drives, LCD screens etc. For bulk volume purchases, as in all businesses, laptop parts get a big discount.

For buyers of laptop spares, most suppliers provide many service options like warranty. These can be a 90 day warranty on all parts, personalized service, support for all brands and parts purchased through them etc. The suppliers? business policy of fast and efficient service will promote customer satisfaction and build loyalty amongst repair and service shops and individuals who need their spare parts on time. Spares are readily available for brands including Sony, Acer, NEC, Dell, IBM, gateway, HP, Compaq, Toshiba, and Armada.

As of September 5, 2010, CVS drugstores are selling a Sylvania netbook for $99. There’s been plenty of buzz in the press, but no complete reviews.

We bought one of these yesterday and plan to return it today. It’s not bad, it just doesn’t serve our needs.

What we wanted was a substitute for our laptops so we didn’t have to lug them around on short trips. What we got is, for all practical purposes, an oversized PDA.

Following is a comparison and contrast list. “L” stands for WinXP/Vista laptop, “N” stands for the Sylvania netbook.

HARDWARE

L: 4 lbs or more

N: 2 lbs (so light, this is the best thing about it!)

L: Professional build quality

N: Feels more like a toy

L: Slow boot

N: Fast boot

L: Intel or AMD full processors, gigs of RAM

N: Via 8505 processor, 128 mB RAM

L: Battery life 3-4 hours

N: 2 hours after first charge

L: Hard drive (operating system susceptible to viruses)

N: Flash drive (easily reset to factory specs with a paper clip if it crashes); SD card slot (not SDHC)

L: 2-3 USB ports

N: 3 USB ports

L: Good looking screen, at least 1024 x 768.

N: Bright screen lacking contrast, 800 x 480 pixels. It’s ok for browsing, although some websites are wider than 800 pixels and you’ll need to use the slider bar to see the right side of the screen. Being a small screen, 7″, icons in the bottom tray are quite small. With some screen content, pixel columns are visible, indicating non-uniform pixels. This is not a big problem if you are absorbed in the content.

L: Reasonably full sized keyboard

N: Barely touch typeable. Space key feels recessed, requiring more than a tap to operate. Touchpad on tested unit was erratic. I used a USB wireless mouse, which somewhat defeats the benefit of extreme portability.

L: WiFi 802.11 b/g or better, plus ethernet (wired)

N: WiFi 802.11, plus ethernet (wired)

L: Internal speakers, headphone jack, microphone jack, built-in microphone, Line In jack (optional)

N: Internal speakers, headphone jack, microphone jack (no built-in mic). Speakers are tiny and tinny; I recorded with two microphones. The first was part of a quality Telex headset, fwith which the recording of my voice was tinny and soft. I used an older dynamic microphone for tape recordings; it provided a quality, rich sound to my voice. There was noticeable background hiss on files recorded with this computer. Other audio files, such as videos and mp3s sounded fine.

SOFTWARE

L: WinXP or Vista — easy to find programs

N: Windows CE 6.0, similar to Windows Mobile- limited programs. Some websites will identify it as a mobile device and set their screen display for it. Three are plenty of Windows Mobile or CE applications available if you know where to find them on the net.

L: Full function browser choices, i.e. IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera

N: IE, looks normal although somewhat crippled. IE won’t play some Flash and other videos. N requires an external program to play YouTube. It comes with Windows Media Player, which doesn’t stream YouTube. So it also comes with TCIMP (Core Player), a popular video player that allows streaming. I tried to fast forward through “Nosferatu” on YouTube, and the player locked up, requiring ALT-CTRL-DEL to end the program.

L: You’re going to have an email application

N: I found no email application (e.g. Outlook), only an IM application. You can, of course, use web based email such as Hotmail, Yahoo, and Google.

L: MSWord and Excel are available.

N: Only a Word reader and Excel reader are installed. It does have Wordpad, which will save docs in MSWord format.

The desktop is similar to WinXP. There are choices of desktop backgrounds, two of which seemed to be from anime, targeted to pre-teens or early teens. Applications open quickly. Browsing is reasonably quick.

CONCLUSIONS

The bottlenecks for me are the limitations of Windows CE and associated software. I can get used to the little keyboard and screen. If it used alkaline batteries rather than rechargables, I might be inclined to keep it as an emergency device. It’s wonderfully stowable. But rechargeables don’t hold the charge over several months of inactivity like alkalines do. This is the same problem I have with the portable TV I keep in the trunk of my car.

As a single use computer, such as watching YouTube or simply surfing, it could work well. Notwithstanding web surfing concerns, it could make a good children’s laptop.

Although computers only had floppy disk drives for many years, the CD-ROM was eventually added to computers. This allowed computer users to add information sources to their computers that were up to 700 MB in size instead of the 1.44MB limits that existed on most floppy disks. As you can imagine, this had a substantial effect on the quality and visual effects of programs that were sold on CD-ROMs.

From there, it was only a matter of time before computers were equipped with CD writers so that you could store the music and video data that you were finally experiencing on your computer. This gave the capacity to store up to 700MB of data in one small CD, and most people began to back up their computers onto CDs instead.

Even though there are better ways to store your data now, the CD-R is not a bad option, especially if you do not have large amounts of data to store. If you only have a few hundred MB or a few GB of data, you can very effectively back up your entire computer.

Additionally, even if you use DVD-Rs to do full system backups, the CD-R can be used to store small portions of data that get edited on a regular basis.

What does 48x mean?

48x (and the other numbers) are simply speed markers for the drive or CD-R. Different CD writers will write to the CD with speeds that depend on the numbers listed on the drive. Therefore, a 48x or 52x drive means that the CD itself is rotating 48 or 52 times per minute inside of the drive. As you can guess, these are high speed drives! You can also get slower speeds.’

Slow speed CD writers usually have fewer write errors. However, they will take longer, and may not be ideal if you have to back up a lot of data.

What is a CD-RW?

There are two types of CD that are important on a day to day basis. These are the CD-Rs and the CD-RWs. The CD-R is just a basic blank CD. They are usually marked with speed numbers (like 48x), which is how you can tell whether or not they are perfectly matched to the speeds that your CD drive will write at.

The CD-RW on the other hand, is a blank CD that you can write to more than once. This is good if you are looking to change your backup, or if you are just using the CD for transferring data from one computer to another.

Stick to brands you trust! Even the best drive will have some write errors, but if you purchase a good drive, you’ll have fewer errors and will waste less time and fewer CDs. These drives are also likely to come with software that will allow you to write to CD-Rs or CD-RWs.
